What is SSC CGL Cut off? Sectional Cutoff /Overall Cut Off
You know that the CGL exam which is conducted by the SSC is consists of total 4 tiers, out of which first 3 tiers are meant to be passed on the basis of cutoffs of ssc cgl exam.
The cut-off is a particular figure, which is calculated out of the total marks of the respective tier exam, on the basis of various performance vertexes.
It is this cutoff on the basis of which the failure and passing of yours are decided by the exam authorities. If your scores are enough to match or exceed the decided cutoff, then you are the winner of the exam, else you have to again attend the whole CGL exam process.
The cut-offs are dynamic in nature, which differs from year to year. It sometimes shows the approximate figure every year, so you can easily guess the expected current year cutoff by analyzing the ssc cgl previous year cutoffs.
Now, the ssc cgl cutoffs 2018 also have types, it has 2 types-
• SSC CGL Sectional cutoffs
• SSC CGL Overall cutoffs
Sectional cut-offs are those cutoffs which are meant for only a single tier and its related subjects. For example, if the tier 1 exam has 4 subjects in it, then for each subject, a separate cutoff will be calculated which is mandatory for you to achieve at least that much cutoff in your scores so that to pass that exam. A single difference in any of the 4 subjects will lead you to lose that examination.
Overall, the cutoff is the combined cutoff which is calculated by adding all the tiers’ total marks and then calculating the figure to be mandatory to achieve by the student to pass the final round.
Example – Suppose that you have given the tier 1, tier 2 and tier 3. And now you are waiting for the result of tier 3 after passing tier 1 and tier 2 individually and combined. If in case you have passed the tier 3 individually, that doesn’t mean that you have cracked the whole examination.
Dear, the picture is still remaining. You have to pass the overall SSC CGL final cutoff also which take into consideration the together scores of tier 1 scores, tier 2 scores, and tier 3 scores. Only then, your selection in SSC CGL will be considered as the final.

Factors deciding the SSC CGL Cut Off 2019
Remember those days, when your results in school days were declared. You had seen in your classes that your scores in the exam decide that at which performance level you stand.
If you have gained 60% or more than that, then you were promoted to next class. But, when your scores were less than 30% then you were exempted from the next promotion and you had to remain again in that class for the whole year. These 30% and 60% here are the factors of judgment on the basis of which your performance criteria are decided.
Same is the case with the SSC CGL cutoffs. The cut-offs decision is backed by the number of factors which are compulsory to analyze first before declaring any cut-off. Now, what are those factors let us see-
Most of the students asked this question many times that Why SSC CGL cut off is so high? Answer is below
- The performance of total students in the tiers. If the majority of students have performed well, the cutoff goes very high; else it is average or low.
- The number of candidate’s presence in the exam out of total applying aspirants.
- The total vacancies available for the cadre in the organization. If there is a large vacancy, then the chances for maximum selection from the aspirants increased and cut offs the cutoffs most probably ranges in the average figure.
- The number of vacancies available in the individual states. If a particular state holds the low number of seats for a particular cadre, then the cutoff for that state in that cadre goes high and vice-versa.
- SSC CGL Previous year cut offs (optional).
- The difficulty level of the exam. If the level of exam is a difficult one, the cutoffs are expected to reach the low figure; else if the level is an average or very easy one, then the cutoffs always reach high. So, it is always better if the paper level comes is difficult.

How many marks to Score to clear SSC CGL cut off?
You have to score SSC CGL cutoff marks, at the minimum to crack the examinations for which it is concerned. If the cut off for tier 1 is decided to be 50 out of 100 marks paper, then you should have 50 marks as your obtained marks to crack tier 1.
If you are left with just half marks or one mark, then no concession or grade will be allotted to you as compensation. You will be simply filtered out from the shortlisted students and then you have to fight again for tier 1 from the beginning.
Similar is with tier 2. But in tier 2, you not only have to score cut off of the individual tier but there will be one more cutoff for tier1 and tier 2 both. You have to crack that combined cutoffs too to pass the tier 2 and then you’ll be promoted to tier 3.
The same process will be continued for the tier 3 exam. Tier 1+ tier 2+ tier 3 marks will be calculated and it is checked whether the cut off for all the three tiers are matching the figure cutoff of the final selection in the CGL.
If you failed in tier 3, then that doesn’t mean that you can fight directly for tier3. You have to again start from the beginning of the process, i.e., you have to give tier 1, then tier 2 and then tier 3. Until and unless you pass the tier 3, till then you will not be selected for the post.
Note that these cutoffs cannot be decided by anyone in the air, rather, the cutoffs are properly and deeply calculated by the authorized authorities in the commission, who do hard work in analyzing various factors like the student performances, students’ presence in the exam and the vacancies available.
